In 2023 I wanted to make it a personal mission to raise more awareness for and about Dyslexia. Along with others throughout New Zealand, we lit up various monuments and iconic structures Aqua for the first week in October. In 2024, I want to do it again! Dyslexia Awareness Week 2024 will take place Monday 7th October – Sunday 13th October. Please help get behind me, and light it up Aqua for Dyslexia.

Every year, countries around the world light up to show solidarity for Dyslexia and I would like to see New Zealand following along. The statistics vary, however, it is commonly thought that between 5 – 15% of the population is affected. New Zealand, if we are a nation of 5 million, then potentially a whopping 750,000 could be affected. So why should we light it up Aqua and show solidarity?

1. Raise Awareness: Dyslexia is a common learning disability that affects reading, writing, and spelling. Lighting up windows in aqua draws attention to the cause and helps raise awareness about dyslexia. Many people may not fully understand what dyslexia is or how it affects individuals, so this act can spark conversations and educate the public.

2. Show Support: Lighting up your windows in aqua is a visible and tangible way to show support for individuals with dyslexia and their families. Imagine going on a walk with your kids and seeing aqua windows everywhere!

3. Reduce Stigma: Dyslexia, like other learning disabilities, can come with stigma and misconceptions. By participating in awareness campaigns like this, you contribute to reducing the stigma associated with dyslexia. This may encourage those affected by dyslexia to seek help and support without fear of judgment.

4. Promote Inclusivity: It’s essential to promote inclusivity, especially at school. Lighting up windows in aqua helps remind people that everyone should have the opportunity to learn and succeed, regardless of their learning differences.

5. Advocate for Change: Dyslexia Awareness Week often involves advocacy efforts aimed at improving educational accommodations for individuals with dyslexia. By participating, you can contribute to these advocacy efforts and help drive positive change.

6. Community Engagement: Lighting up our windows in aqua can bring communities together around a common cause.

7. Inspire Others: Your participation can inspire others! When more people participate, the impact is much greater!
