Description
This digital downloadable resource has 30 activities to support learners in reading and writing during the summer holidays. The main idea behind this is to help prevent the decline in reading and writing skills that often happens during the long summer break.
Many learners have worked hard to improve their reading and writing skills, and these 30 ideas are here to help slow down the summer slide by actively encouraging some reading and writing for most days.
The activities are designed to be done with an adult or family member to support collaboration and enjoyment with reading and writing. The plan is to do one activity daily, five days a week. Then take a break for the remaining two days. Since there are approximately six weeks of holiday ahead, there is an activity for each weekday of the school holidays.
The activities are designed to rotate and repeat, and each repetition has a different theme apart from one staple activity, which is a reflection based on the best and most challenging parts of a day. You will see this repeated four times. The pages can be trimmed and pasted into an A4 blank journal.
Encourage learners to add their ideas and write in their journal if they like. They can draw pictures, or express themselves in any way they prefer. At the end of the holiday, read back through the journal with your learner, celebrate their hard work, and reflect on the summer adventures, and their reading and writing achievements.
Please note, that much of the reading and writing may or will need support from you, or other family members. For example, the first activity is a recipe to read and then bake together. As mentioned, these activities are designed to bring an element of bonding to reading and writing.
